From Baxter state park to Monson is one hundred miles with out a resupply. At least that is what the sing said. It isn't true since there is now white house landing.about halfway through, but it is the longest stretch of wilderness with out a resupply. I was nervous starting at Katadin means that you enter it on day two of your hike. Actually day three for me as I took a zero at Abol Campground in Baxter State park. I had reserved two days there because I thought that a four thousand foot climb was going to suck the life out of my legs. and I was correct. It was lucky that I had since my right knee was swollen I had twisted it coming down. After a day of mostly rest I headed back to the trail. Back to the Birches. to continue my hike. The van from the at lodge picked me up as I was walking the two miles from the Abol camp ground back to the trail. I guess that this could be considered my first hitch.
The so I hit the trail about eight and headed South. the Abol bridge campgrownd is about ten miles from Baxter state park. They are easy miles they are flat and follow the river. you see the Little and big Niagara. There are a few sections were it is rooty but flat and mostly dirt. At the Abol Bridger Camp ground there is a little bar that serves beer and hamburgers. I nearly didn't get my hamburger because the generator was going up and down and power was intermittent. I stopped for a beer any way and by the time I finished my Baxter IPA, which I thought was good, the grill was ready to make me a burger.
Once done with my burger and headed out to Hurd Brook lean-to to spend the night I set my tent up a few yards behind the shelter and did a quick and not high enough bear hang cooked I think chili for dinner and went to bed.
